Wolkersdorf Castle (Austria)

Weather…

Wolkersdorf Castle is located in the Weinviertel region of Lower Austria and was originally built around 1186 as a fortified moated castle. Over the centuries, the structure underwent numerous architectural transformations, with its current appearance significantly shaped by renovations in the 18th century under Maria Theresa. During this time, it served as an imperial hunting lodge and summer residence, explaining the magnificent design of the facades and interiors. A historical highlight was the year 1809, when Napoleon Bonaparte established his headquarters in the castle during the Napoleonic Wars. After the end of the monarchy, the building was used for various purposes, including as a military hospital and later as a school. In the 1970s, the municipality of Wolkersdorf acquired the estate and transformed it into a spirited cultural center, which today hosts exhibitions, concerts, and regional events.
