Schwechat is a significant city in the state of Lower Austria, located southeast of Vienna and primarily known worldwide for the Vienna-Schwechat International Airport. The city's history dates back to Roman times when the cavalry fort Aequinoctium was situated here. A defining element of the city's history is its industrial development, particularly the founding of the Schwechat Brewery by Anton Dreher in the 18th century, which revolutionized lager beer. Today, Schwechat is a central economic hub that, in addition to the airport, hosts Austria's largest oil refinery (OMV). Despite its strong industrial presence, the city features green recreational spaces such as the Rothmühle Castle Park and the riverside areas of the Schwechat and Liesing rivers. Culturally, Schwechat is nationally renowned for the Nestroy Games held at the Rothmühle. The city possesses excellent infrastructure and is a major hub for rail and road traffic in the Vienna Basin. The combination of historical heritage, modern industry, and high functionality as a transport hub makes Schwechat a unique location within the Vienna metropolitan region. Urban development is closely linked to the dynamics of the federal capital while maintaining an independent identity.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
