The Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna (KHM) on Maria-Theresien-Platz is one of the world's most significant art museums, housing the extensive collections of the House of Habsburg. The imposing building was commissioned by Emperor Franz Joseph I and built by architects Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer in Neo-Renaissance style, opening in 1891. Its Picture Gallery is among the most precious worldwide, featuring masterpieces by Bruegel, Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Titian; of particular note is the world's largest collection of works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Other highlights include the Egyptian-Oriental Collection, the Collection of Greek and Roman Antiquities, and the magnificent Kunstkammer, regarded as a treasury of curious and precious objects. The monumental staircase impresses with ceiling frescoes by Mihály Munkácsy and works by Gustav Klimt. Together with its twin building opposite, the Natural History Museum, it forms an architectural ensemble of extraordinary grandeur. The magnificent Cupola Hall, with its integrated museum café, invites visitors to linger in an imperial atmosphere.
