The Belvedere in Vienna is a Baroque palace complex built as a summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy. The complex consists of the Upper and Lower Belvedere, connected by a terraced garden. The Lower Belvedere was constructed between 1714 and 1716, while the representative Upper Belvedere was completed between 1717 and 1723 according to plans by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. After Prince Eugene's death, Maria Theresa acquired the property for the imperial family. A historical milestone was the signing of the Austrian State Treaty on May 15, 1955, in the Marble Hall of the Upper Belvedere, which restored Austria's independence. Today, the palace houses the Austrian Gallery Belvedere, which holds the world's most significant collection of works by Gustav Klimt, including the painting "The Kiss." The gardens are considered a masterpiece of Baroque landscape design by Dominique Girard.
