Klagenfurt am Wörthersee is the capital of the Austrian state of Carinthia and, with over one hundred thousand inhabitants, is the cultural and economic center of the region. The city is situated in the Klagenfurt Basin and extends to the eastern shore of Lake Wörthersee, one of Austria's most famous swimming lakes. The history of the settlement dates back to the 12th century, with the city officially receiving city rights in 1246. A decisive moment in the city's history was the year 1518, when Emperor Maximilian I donated the city to the estates after a large fire had destroyed vast parts of it. Under the rule of the estates, Klagenfurt was rebuilt as a modern residence city in the Italian Renaissance style, which can still be recognized today in the regular layouts and magnificent arcade courtyards of the old town. The Neue Platz forms the center, dominated by the Lindwurm Fountain, which is based on a local legend about a dragon in the marshy area. Today, the city is home to the Alpen-Adria University and is an important technology location. Cultural highlights such as the City Theater, Europapark, and proximity to the Alps make Klagenfurt an attractive residential and travel destination.
