Judenburg is situated in the Upper Styrian Mur Valley at an elevation of 737 meters and has a history spanning over a millennium. The first documented mention dates back to 1074 as mercatum Judinburch, highlighting its early significance as a prominent trading hub. During the late Middle Ages, the town evolved into a central node for long-distance trade in iron, salt, and the valuable celtic nard oil. The most striking architectural landmark is the 75-meter-high City Tower, originally built as the bell tower for St. Nicholas Parish Church, which now houses a state-of-the-art planetarium. The historical old town is characterized by grand burgher houses with Gothic and Baroque facades that reflect its former wealth. Today, as a district capital, Judenburg serves critical administrative, educational, and economic roles for the entire Murtal region.
