Völkermarkt is located in southeastern Carinthia in the Jaun valley. The town is geographically characterized by its prominent location on a high terrace on the northern bank of the Drava, which today is dammed to form the Völkermarkt reservoir. Historically, Völkermarkt was founded in the 12th century and developed into an important market town due to its strategic position on the Drava and major trade routes. The architecture of the main square is characterized by stately townhouses from various eras, which bear witness to its former importance as a trading center. The parish church of St. Magdalene is a striking Gothic building in the center. Economically, Völkermarkt is now an important service and trade center for the entire district. Industry has primarily settled in the commercial areas on the periphery. Demographically, the town is characterized by a stable population structure, with the region's bilingualism (German and Slovenian) playing an important cultural role. Leisure and sports activities are heavily focused on the reservoir, which is particularly popular with rowers and fishermen.
