Vagharshapat, still usually called Echmiadzin in everyday speech, lies about 18 km west of Yerevan in the Ararat plain and is the spiritual centre of the entire Armenian Apostolic Church. The town was re-founded by King Vagharsh I in the 2nd century BC and elevated to capital of the Armenian kingdom around AD 120. When King Trdat III declared Christianity the state religion around AD 301, making Armenia the world's first Christian nation, he commissioned the Mother Cathedral of Etchmiadzin here, regarded as the oldest cathedral in Christendom and listed by UNESCO together with the churches of Saint Hripsime and Saint Gayane and the ruins of Zvartnots. Today Vagharshapat has around 35,000 inhabitants, is the seat of the Catholicos of All Armenians, hosts theological academies and houses a museum of precious relics, including, by tradition, a fragment of the lance that pierced Christ, as well as the consecration of the holy myrrh held every seven years.
