💡 Tips
- The town is the first-rate base for visiting the nearby UNESCO-listed Sanahin and Haghpat monasteries.
- The old Soviet cable car connecting the lower and upper town is no longer operational, so rely on taxis or local marshrutkas.
- Wear sturdy shoes, as walking between the town levels or exploring the gorge involves steep, uneven paths.
- The canyon microclimate can be unexpectedly humid or chilly compared to the surrounding plateaus, so dress in layers.
🍽 Food
Fresh local fish, typically served crispy and roasted at rustic restaurants right along the riverbanks.
A hearty, slow-cooked meat and vegetable stew. Seek out traditional diners in the lower town.
Taste the salty, handmade cheeses sourced from nearby villages and sold at small local grocery shops.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Buy wild-foraged herbal teas sold by local grandmothers at small stalls near the main roads or monasteries.
The Debed Gorge honey has a distinct floral taste; look for roadside vendors selling jars.
The 12th-century arched stone bridge over the Debed River is an atmospheric and quiet spot for photography.
Walk to the edge of the upper residential plateau for sweeping, peaceful views down into the deep gorge.

Alaverdi lies in the northern Lori Province, about 165 km north of Yerevan and only some 35 km from the Georgian border, in a dramatic gorge of the Debed River on two levels: a lower town at roughly 750 metres and an upper platform of Soviet apartment blocks at around 1,400 metres, linked by a cable car. With about 13,000 inhabitants, Alaverdi is the historic centre of Armenian copper mining: small family-run smelters operated here from the 18th century, French companies developed industrial-scale operations from 1899, and in Soviet times the Alaverdi copper combine made Armenia one of the USSR's main copper producers. The gorge is spanned by the famous single-arched 12th-century Sanahin stone bridge, while on both sides rise the UNESCO World Heritage monasteries of Sanahin and Haghpat (10th, 13th centuries), with their scriptoria, khachkars and medieval bell-towers.
