Gvozdansko Castle
Gvozdansko Castle, located in the hills between Dvor and Glina, stands as a profound symbol of heroic resistance and sacrifice in Croatian history. Built in the 15th century by the noble Zrinski family, the fortress primarily served to protect nearby silver mines and a local mint. It achieved legendary status during the epic siege of 1577-1578 by the Ottoman forces led by Ferhad Pasha Sokolović. For three months, the 300 defenders, consisting of local soldiers and miners, endured extreme sub-zero temperatures, starvation, and a total lack of ammunition, yet refused every offer of surrender. When the Ottoman soldiers finally broke through the gates on January 13, 1578, they found no living soul; all defenders had perished from hunger or frozen to death at their posts. Greatly moved by such unparalleled bravery, Ferhad Pasha ordered a Christian burial for the fallen defenders. Today, the ruins of Gvozdansko remain a national monument, often referred to as the 'Croatian Masada.' The remains of its massive circular towers still evoke the formidable strength of this historic border stronghold.
