Mount Marahuaca is an imposing table mountain (tepui) in Venezuela's Amazonas State, reaching an elevation of 2,800 meters. Together with the neighboring Cerro Duida, it forms the Duida-Marahuaca Massif within the national park of the same name. Geologically, Marahuaca belongs to the Roraima Supergroup, composed of massive sandstone and quartzite exceeding 1.7 billion years in age. The mountain's relief is defined by extremely steep, near-vertical rock faces and a rugged summit plateau that, due to its isolation, has allowed for the completely independent evolution of flora and fauna. In the mythology of the local Ye'kuana indigenous people, Marahuaca is revered as a sacred site, the ancestral origin of cultivated plants, particularly cassava. The mountain's ecological significance is immense, hosting numerous endemic species adapted to the nutrient-poor soils and humid cloud climate. Scientific expeditions to the summit are rare and logistically demanding, leaving Marahuaca as one of the least explored peaks in South America.

Access to Mount Marahuaca is usually restricted to scientific researchers or highly experienced mountaineers with permits. Reaching the base typically involves a multi-day river journey followed by hiking.

Expeditions are typically planned during the dry season from December to March to ensure manageable water levels in rivers. During the rainy season, navigating the access rivers can become extremely dangerous.

The mountain features extremely steep vertical walls and a high-altitude plateau with very rugged rock surfaces. Movement on the summit is typically slow due to the intricate network of cracks and boulders.

What to bring

High-altitude climbing gear and specialized equipment for vertical ascent are necessary for anyone aiming for the summit. Durable rain protection and thermal clothing are also required for the summit camp.

Parking

No parking is available as the area is only reachable by boat or foot after leaving remote river ports far away. Private vehicles are usually stored in guarded facilities in the town of Puerto Ayacucho.
