Mount Duida is an impressive table-top mountain located in the Amazonas state of southern Venezuela, rising to an elevation of 2,358 meters. Together with Mount Marahuaca, it forms the core of the Duida-Marahuaca National Park, one of the country's most remote protected areas. The mountain is a prominent part of the Guiana Shield, characterized by its sheer sandstone cliffs and an ecologically diverse summit plateau. Mount Duida was first extensively studied in the late 1920s by expeditions from the American Museum of Natural History. During these explorations, scientists discovered an extraordinary number of endemic species, particularly carnivorous plants and rare amphibians. The vegetation on the plateau is specialized to survive in nutrient-poor soils and high rainfall conditions. Due to its extreme inaccessibility, Mount Duida remains one of the least explored regions in South America. It serves as a vital component of the local water cycle, feeding several tributaries of the Orinoco River.

Getting there

Access to Mount Duida is extremely difficult and usually requires a private charter flight to the nearest airstrip. From there, visitors must typically embark on a long trek through dense jungle terrain.

The dry season, spanning from December to March, is the most favorable time for an expedition to this tepui. During the wet months, the summit is often shrouded in clouds and heavy rain occurs frequently.

The terrain is characterized by steep sandstone cliffs and a plateau filled with unique, endemic vegetation. Navigating the rocky slopes typically requires technical skill and a very high level of fitness.

Climbers should bring professional mountaineering gear, including ropes and harnesses, for the steep sections. High-quality sleeping bags and waterproof containers for electronics are also essential items.

There is no formal parking available near the mountain; all expeditions must be carefully coordinated in advance. Vehicles are typically left in the town of La Esmeralda under local supervision for safety.
