The Ventuari River is a major right-bank tributary of the Orinoco, flowing for about 520 kilometers through the Amazonas state in southern Venezuela. It originates in the Guiana Highlands, near the remote and famous Jaua and Sarisariñama tepuis. The river traverses some of the world's most pristine tropical rainforests and is noted for its high levels of biological diversity. Its waters are a mix of clearwater and blackwater, fostering a unique aquatic ecosystem with many endemic species. Along its banks reside various indigenous groups, including the Ye'kuana people, for whom the river is a vital source of food and transportation. The Ventuari is characterized by numerous rapids and waterfalls that restrict large-scale navigation but help maintain its wild integrity. It plays a central role in the ecology of the Venezuelan Amazon and remains largely unaffected by industrial pollution. Scientific research in the area has led to the discovery of several new fish species unique to this basin.

Getting there

The Ventuari is extremely remote and usually accessible only by boat from Puerto Ayacucho via the Orinoco or by small charter planes. As there are no public roads, expeditions must often be planned months in advance with specialized tour operators.

Best season

The best time to visit is during the transition between the dry and rainy seasons when water levels are stable enough for navigation. During extreme drought, sandbars may block the way, while heavy rains can make navigation hazardous.

Terrain & paths

The area consists of untouched rainforest and a winding river course with rapids. The banks are densely vegetated, and established paths hardly exist, so movement is restricted almost entirely to boats or narrow indigenous trails.

What to bring

Full expedition gear including water filters, mosquito nets, and robust rain clothing is mandatory. Additionally, travelers should bring sturdy trekking sandals, several sets of quick-drying clothes, and a comprehensive first-aid kit.

Parking

There are no parking facilities near the river as the area is not accessible by road. Vehicles must be left in guarded long-term parking lots in Puerto Ayacucho before the transfer by boat or charter plane begins.

Safety

Extreme isolation requires self-sufficient planning and the accompaniment of local guides. Medical help is days away, so a satellite phone for emergencies and careful malaria prophylaxis are strongly recommended for all travelers.

Time needed

Due to complex travel logistics and vast distances, tours to the Ventuari usually last between 7 and 12 days. Planning for less time is hardly worthwhile, as the transport into this pristine wilderness alone consumes a significant portion of the trip.
