Cuyuni Highlands

The Cuyuni Highlands are part of the massive Guiana Shield in southeastern Venezuela, extending along the Cuyuni River basin in Bolívar State. This region is characterized by a rugged relief covered by dense tropical rainforests, geologically comprising some of the oldest rock formations on Earth. The highlands are exceptionally rich in mineral resources, particularly gold and diamonds, which has fueled intensive mining activities and ecological challenges since the 19th century. Geographically, they serve as a transition zone between the low-lying savannas and the high tepuis of Canaima National Park further south. The Cuyuni River itself serves as a crucial transportation artery for indigenous communities and miners, despite being hindered by numerous rapids and falls. The biodiversity of the Cuyuni Highlands is vast, providing habitat for rare predators like the jaguar and a multitude of endemic amphibian species. Historically, the region has been central to long-standing territorial disputes with neighboring Guyana, highlighting the geopolitical significance of this mineral-wealthy upland area.
