Nukus is the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan, in the far west of Uzbekistan, on the lower Amu Darya not far from the dramatically shrunken Aral Sea. The city was rebuilt in 1932 during the Soviet construction boom and today has around 320,000 inhabitants. It is internationally famous for the Savitsky Museum, which holds the world's second-largest collection of Russian avant-garde art; many works survived the Stalinist purges precisely because the region was deemed unimportant. The local economy rests on cotton processing, food industries, and natural-gas extraction. Nukus is grappling with the ecological aftermath of the Aral Sea disaster: drinking-water quality, public health, and agriculture have all been lastingly affected. Despite this, the city remains the most important educational and cultural centre for the Karakalpak minority.
