Moynaq (Uzbekistan)

Weather…

Moynaq (also spelled Muynak) stands as a haunting monument to the Aral Sea environmental disaster. Once a bustling Soviet fishing port, the receding waters have left the town stranded in the Aralkum Desert. Its most iconic sight is the 'Ship Graveyard', where rusted trawlers rest in the sand, creating a surreal and somber landscape. A small local museum documents the region's history and the rapid disappearance of the sea. Visitors are drawn by the dramatic visual impact of the stranded ships and the stark desert beauty. The town has also gained fame as the host of the 'Stihia' electronic music festival, aimed at raising environmental awareness. It is a place of deep reflection on the relationship between humans and nature. Reaching Moynaq requires a 3-hour drive from Nukus. The best times to visit are spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October), as summer heat can be oppressive and winter temperatures drop far below freezing.
