🍽 Food
The Uzbek national dish of rice, meat, and carrots. Freshly cooked, usually at lunchtime, in the large teahouses (chayhanas).
Marinated meat skewers grilled over charcoal. A popular dinner option at stands around the bazaar.
Fresh flatbread baked in a traditional clay oven (tandoor). An essential accompaniment to any meal.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The main spot to stock up on nuts, dried fruits, and fresh provisions before heading out into the desert.
Around the train station, you will find small kiosks selling snacks, drinks, and handmade trinkets for travelers.
The edges of the city, where buildings give way to the vast desert landscape, offer moments of absolute silence.
In the late afternoon, these shaded spots are well-suited for relaxing quietly over a pot of green tea.
Water temperature…
Kungrad lies in the north of Karakalpakstan and, with around 65,000 inhabitants, is one of the main industrial centres of this otherwise sparsely populated desert region on the former southern shore of the Aral Sea. Here stands Central Asia's largest soda plant, the Kungrad Soda Plant, which uses nearby salt deposits to produce soda ash and other chemicals for the glass and detergent industries. Rail transport also plays a key role: the Kungrad-Beyneu line links Uzbekistan via Kazakhstan to the Russian rail network and is one of the most important freight corridors in Central Asia. Despite this industrial importance, Kungrad suffers heavily from the Aral Sea crisis; dust and salt storms from the dried-out seabed weigh on public health and farming. Locally, livestock is raised and melons and rice are grown, while a strong Karakalpak folk culture remains alive.
