Badai-Tugai Nature Reserve (Uzbekistan)

Weather…

The Badai-Tugai State Nature Reserve is located on the right bank of the Amu Darya in the Republic of Karakalpakstan and protects Central Asia's most valuable tugai forests. These gallery forests form a green oasis in the middle of the desert and depend on the river's periodic flooding. The reserve was established in 1971, with a primary focus on the reintroduction and protection of the rare Bukhara deer. Dense stands of willows, poplars, and oleaster provide shelter for numerous birds and small mammals. Hydrologically, the area is heavily dependent on the water flow of the Amu Darya, which is why river regulation poses a constant challenge for ecosystem preservation. Historically, the region is known for the tomb of Saint Sultan Uwais, which is a significant pilgrimage site. The reserve is a prime example of protecting endangered floodplain ecosystems in arid climatic zones.
