Shams Solar Power Station (United Arab Emirates)

Weather…

The Shams 1 solar power station is located near Madinat Zayed in the emirate of Abu Dhabi and was the largest concentrated solar power (CSP) plant in the world when it opened in 2013. The facility uses parabolic trough technology to focus sunlight and generate heat, which in turn powers a steam turbine to produce electricity. With an installed capacity of 100 megawatts, Shams 1 provides clean energy to thousands of homes in the United Arab Emirates. The project covers an area of 2.5 square kilometers and consists of over 250,000 mirrors arranged on 768 parabolic trough collectors. By operating this plant, approximately 175,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions are offset annually, equivalent to planting 1.5 million trees. Shams 1 is a milestone in the UAE strategy to significantly increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
