The Liwa Oasis is a memorable string of more than 50 villages located at the northern edge of the Rub al-Khali (Empty Quarter), the world's largest contiguous sand desert. This region in the southern part of Abu Dhabi emirate is the ancestral home of the Bani Yas tribes, from which the ruling families of the UAE originate. Liwa is globally renowned for its massive sand dunes, including the Moreeb Dune, which stands over 300 meters high as one of the tallest dunes in the world and hosts spectacular off-road driving festivals. The oasis is sustained by an ancient underground water reservoir that allows for the cultivation of over 100,000 date palms. Agriculture, specifically date production, remains a central part of local life, highlighted by the annual Liwa Date Festival. In recent decades, Liwa has emerged as a major center for desert tourism, featuring luxury resorts like Qasr Al Sarab that showcase the contrast between traditional Bedouin culture and modern comfort. Despite the harsh desert environment, the oasis radiates a timeless beauty, defined by emerald-green plantations set against golden mountains of sand.
