Ruwais is a strategically significant industrial city located in the western region of Abu Dhabi emirate, approximately 240 kilometers from the capital. Originally conceived in the 1970s by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) as a specialized industrial site, Ruwais has evolved into a modern planned urban center. The centerpiece of the region is the Ruwais Refinery, one of the world's largest petroleum refining complexes, which plays a vital role in the nation's energy supply and export capacity. The city was designed to provide a comprehensive living environment for thousands of skilled workers and their families, featuring modern residential districts, schools, hospitals, and shopping centers. Due to its coastal location, it hosts a high-capacity port specialized in handling crude oil and petrochemical products. In recent years, massive expansion projects have been launched to transition Ruwais into a global hub for the chemical industry. The lush green infrastructure within the city provides a striking contrast to the surrounding arid desert landscape of the Al Dhafra region.
