Snake Island (Ukraine)

Weather…

Snake Island, also known as Zmiinyi Island, is a small but strategically vital territory of Ukraine located in the Black Sea, approximately 35 kilometers off the Danube Delta. Spanning just 0.17 square kilometers, the island is composed of ancient crystalline rocks and features steep cliffs that rise up to 25 meters above the water. In antiquity, it was called 'Leuke' (White Island) and was home to a grand temple dedicated to the Greek hero Achilles. Historical records and archaeological excavations have revealed that sailors visited the island for centuries to offer sacrifices for safe passage across the Euxine Sea. In 1842, a lighthouse was built upon the ruins of the ancient temple, using some of its original stones. Administratively part of the Odesa Oblast, the island contains the small settlement of Bile. Beyond its rich mythological heritage, Snake Island serves as a crucial point for maritime navigation and the protection of Ukraine's territorial waters and offshore energy resources.
