Bilhorod Akkerman Fortress (Ukraine)

Weather…

Bilhorod Akkerman Fortress is built on the ruins of the ancient Greek city of Tyras. The current massive fortification dates primarily from the 13th to 15th centuries, developed by Genoese merchants and later expanded by Moldavian princes like Stephen the Great to defend against Ottoman expansion. The stone walls stretch for 2.5 kilometers, making it one of the largest defensive structures in Eastern Europe, featuring 24 surviving towers. The complex is divided into four distinct courtyards, with the Citadel serving as the most fortified administrative heart. Visitors can walk along the ramparts to enjoy views of the Dniester Estuary and explore the various bastions and gates. The fortress regularly hosts medieval reenactments, knight tournaments, and cultural festivals that bring its long history to life. Excavations of the ancient Greek city Tyras are visible right next to the fortress entrance. The nearby Odessa region is famous for its diverse cuisine and Bessarabian wine production. The fortress is accessible from Odessa via local trains or buses in about two hours. The best time to visit is during the late spring or early autumn to avoid the summer heat while enjoying clear views of the water. Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi remains a major historical landmark in the Northern Black Sea region.
