Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, situated on the Dniester Liman in the Odesa Oblast. The city's history spans over 2,500 years, beginning in the 6th century BC when Milesian Greeks founded the colony of Tyras. Throughout the centuries, it was controlled by Romans, Byzantines, Genoese, Moldavians, and Ottomans, resulting in an exceptionally rich cultural heritage. Its most iconic landmark is the Akkerman Fortress, one of the largest and best-preserved medieval fortifications in Ukraine, constructed between the 13th and 15th centuries. The fortress covers nearly 9 hectares and features massive perimeter walls with 24 defensive towers and a deep dry moat. Beyond the citadel, the city features numerous archaeological excavation sites and ancient churches that testify to its complex past.
