Snake Island (Zmiinyi) is a small, rocky outpost in the northwestern Black Sea, located about 35 kilometers off the coast near the Danube Delta. In ancient times, it was known as the 'Island of Achilles,' and Greek mythology claims a temple dedicated to the hero stood here, possibly serving as his final resting place. The island is characterized by steep cliffs rising up to 25 meters and a flat, windswept plateau. It features a small settlement called Bile, a lighthouse, and a post office. While the island has no trees and limited vegetation, it is a vital stopover for migratory birds. The surrounding waters are a popular site for archaeological diving due to numerous ancient shipwrecks. In recent years, Snake Island has gained global fame as a symbol of Ukrainian resilience and military defiance.
