Dzharylhatsk National Nature Park encompasses Dzharylhach Island in the Black Sea, the largest uninhabited island in Ukraine and Central Europe. Located in the Kherson region, the island is often called the "Ukrainian Maldives" due to its vast white sandy beaches and crystal-clear azure waters. Stretching over 42 kilometers in length, the island is a haven for wildlife, including mouflons, fallow deer, and wild horses that roam freely across the grasslands and salt marshes. Dolphins are frequently spotted in the surrounding sea, while numerous lagoons provide critical nesting grounds for rare bird species. A historic landmark of the island is the old lighthouse, built in 1902, which according to popular local legend was designed by the studio of Gustave Eiffel. The park was established in 2009 to protect this unique coastal ecosystem, which features a rare combination of untouched maritime shores and original steppe flora. Best season
Dzharylhatsk is best visited from late spring to early autumn (May-September) when steppe flowers bloom and birdlife is active. In autumn, migratory waders and gulls stop over in large numbers on the island.
Best time of day
The morning hours are handy for exploring the salt marshes and lagoons in calm light. Late afternoon often sees large flocks of birds flying over the island, especially during migration.
Etiquette
Enter the dunes and salt marshes only on marked paths to protect fragile vegetation. Collecting plants, stones, or shells is strictly prohibited, as is disturbing bird colonies.
What to bring
Binoculars are indispensable for spotting far-flung birds on sandbars and lagoons. Sun protection, water, and windproof clothing are necessary for the island's open, exposed beaches.
