Chyhyryn Castle (Ukraine)

Weather…

Chyhyryn Castle, located on Castle Hill in the Cherkasy Oblast, was the official residence of Bohdan Khmelnytsky and the capital of the Cossack Hetmanate during its 17th-century zenith. Strategically positioned on a high hill overlooking the Tyasmyn River, the fortress was considered one of the most impregnable strongholds of its time. It featured a combination of stone and wooden structures, protected by deep moats and naturally steep slopes. In 1678, following a heroic defense against a massive Ottoman army, the fortress was blown up and almost completely destroyed. In recent decades, parts of the fortress, including the Doroshenko Bastion, have been reconstructed to commemorate Chyhyryn's pivotal role as the cradle of Ukrainian statehood. The site now features a panoramic view of the city and serves as a major historical park featuring monuments dedicated to the glorious era of the Hetmans.
