Novoheorhiivsk, once a flourishing city on the banks of the Dnieper River, holds one of Ukraine's most dramatic histories. In the late 1950s, the city was sacrificed for the construction of the Kremenchuk Reservoir, one of Europe's largest. The entire population was relocated, primarily to the newly founded city of Svitlovodsk, and its historical buildings, churches, and homes were submerged beneath the waves. Today, the city exists only in memories, old photographs, and at the bottom of the reservoir. For history enthusiasts and divers, the site is a fascinating, albeit melancholic, destination. The area is best reached from Kremenchuk or Svitlovodsk. The sight of the vast expanse of water, knowing a city lies beneath, is particularly poignant and thought-provoking in the quiet light of early autumn.
