Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary (Uganda)

Weather…

The Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, founded in 1998, is a refuge for orphaned and rescued chimpanzees located on a 100-hectare island in Lake Victoria, Uganda. Managed by the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust (CSWCT), the island, of which approximately 95 hectares are forested, provides a semi-natural habitat where the animals can roam freely. The chimpanzees, most of whom are victims of the illegal wildlife trade, receive comprehensive care and the opportunity for social interaction within a stable community. The project plays a crucial role in species conservation and in educating the public about the threats facing chimpanzees. Visitors can observe the feeding times from a raised platform, allowing for a close encounter without disturbing the animals. Revenue from tourism directly funds the sanctuary's operations and the trust's wider educational and community programs.
