Lake Mburo National Park (Uganda)

Weather…

Lake Mburo National Park is Uganda's smallest savanna national park, covering 370 square kilometres. It is conveniently located along the highway between Kampala and the larger parks to the west. Despite its small size, the park has a remarkable diversity of habitats, including open savannas, acacia woodlands, rocky outcrops, seasonal and permanent wetlands, and five lakes, of which Lake Mburo is the largest. This variety supports a rich array of wildlife. The park is particularly known for its large populations of zebras, impalas (the only place in Uganda where they are found), elands, and buffaloes. Giraffes have been successfully reintroduced in recent years. Due to the absence of elephants and lions (though occasional lone lions are spotted), activities like guided walks and horseback safaris are popular and safe ways to explore the bush. Boat trips on Lake Mburo offer excellent opportunities for viewing hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of water birds.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry seasons from June to September and December to February are optimal, as animals gather at waterholes and vegetation is less dense. In the rainy months, spotting antelopes in tall grass can be challenging.
🌅
Best time of day
Dawn and early morning are best for game drives, when antelopes and zebras emerge from bushes to graze. Late afternoon before sunset also yields many sightings.
📜
Etiquette
Stay in your vehicle and only exit at designated lookout points. It is forbidden to feed the animals or leave the roads to protect the fragile savanna.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars with at least 10x magnification are recommended to clearly see the shy antelopes from a distance. A camera with telephoto lens and sun protection are also important.
🧭
Getting there
The park is about 240 kilometers west of Kampala, reached via paved road to the gate. Private vehicle or guided safari is necessary; public transport does not run directly.
🦌
What to expect
Antelopes are highly vigilant and may flee instantly when threatened - approach slowly and avoid sudden movements. It often takes time for them to reappear after a disturbance.
