💡 Tips

  • Boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis) are the fastest way through traffic, but always wear a helmet and use ride-hailing apps for safer drivers.
  • Carry cash in smaller Ugandan Shilling denominations, as change for large bills is hard to find at street vendors.
  • Traffic jams are severe during rush hours; plan your meetings or sightseeing around these peaks.
  • English is widely spoken, but learning a few words in Luganda like 'Oli otya' (How are you) goes a long way.

While outside Kampala, it's a first-rate half-day trip to escape the city's hustle and see monkeys and birds.

Kampala, the bustling capital of Uganda, is uniquely set across more than twenty hills overlooking the northern shores of Lake Victoria. Historically the capital of the Buganda Kingdom, its name translates to 'the hill of the impalas', reflecting the lush savannah that once covered the area. Today, Kampala is the economic powerhouse of the nation, driving trade, manufacturing, and financial services for the entire Lake Victoria basin. The city is a study in contrasts, where sleek skyscrapers on Nakasero Hill overlook the sprawling, chaotic energy of the St. Balikuddembe (Owino) Market. As a cultural center, it houses the Uganda Museum, showcasing the country's rich ethnological and natural history, and the Kasubi Tombs, the ancestral burial grounds of Buganda royalty and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Educationally, Kampala is synonymous with Makerere University, which for decades has been a beacon of higher learning in East Africa. The city's geography plays a major role in its character, with different hills serving as centers for different faiths: the Anglican Namirembe Cathedral, the Catholic Rubaga Cathedral, and the impressive Uganda National Mosque. The climate is equatorial but tempered by an altitude of nearly 1,200 meters, resulting in a perennial spring-like environment. Kampala is also the center of Uganda's diverse media and arts scene, hosting numerous international festivals and a legendary nightlife. Infrastructure developments, including the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, have improved connectivity to the international airport and neighboring regions. Despite the challenges of rapid urban expansion, Kampala remains one of the safest and most welcoming major cities in Africa, known for its green residential suburbs and the entrepreneurial spirit of its inhabitants.
