Kibuli Mosque
Kibuli Mosque is one of the most historically significant mosques in Uganda, perched atop Kibuli Hill, one of the seven original hills of Kampala. Its history is deeply intertwined with the arrival and spread of Islam in Buganda. The hill was allocated to Prince Badru Kakungulu, a member of the Buganda royal family, by his father, King Daudi Cwa II. Prince Kakungulu dedicated the land to the development of the Muslim community in Uganda. Construction of the current mosque began in the 1940s and was completed in 1951, with funding from Prince Aly Khan, the then spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslims. The mosque is notable for its simple yet elegant architecture, featuring a prominent minaret and a large dome. It has long been the center of one of the rival Muslim factions in Uganda, serving as the headquarters for the Kibuli Supreme Muslim Council faction. Offering panoramic views of Kampala, the mosque is not just a place of worship but also a hub for education and social services, with a hospital and schools nearby, all part of the legacy initiated by Prince Kakungulu.
