Lake Bunyonyi (Uganda)

Weather…

Lake Bunyonyi, located in southwestern Uganda near the border with Rwanda, is renowned for its memorable scenery and its 29 islands. The name 'Bunyonyi' means 'place of many little birds,' a reference to the area's rich avifauna. The lake fills a deep, winding valley and is believed to be the second deepest lake in Africa, with depths estimated up to 900 meters. Its great depth and stratified water structure prevent turnover, leading to low-oxygen conditions in its lower layers. As a result, the lake is free of bilharzia and predators like crocodiles and hippos, making it one of the few lakes in Uganda safe for swimming. The lake's islands each have their own history; the most famous being 'Punishment Island' (Akampene), where unmarried pregnant girls were abandoned. Today, the lake is a popular destination for tourism, canoeing, bird watching, and cultural encounters with the Bakiga and Batwa communities.
