Kinigi is a sector in the Musanze district of Rwanda's Northern Province and the undisputed center of gorilla tourism in the country. It is located directly at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes and is the main starting point for trekking tours to the famous mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. The headquarters of the national park, where the morning briefings for gorilla trekkers take place, is located in Kinigi. The sector's economy is almost entirely focused on tourism. Numerous high-end lodges and hotels have settled here to accommodate the growing number of tourists. In addition to gorilla trekking, the region also provides opportunities for volcano hiking, visiting Dian Fossey's former research station, and experiencing the local culture. Tourism has contributed significantly to the development of the region and the protection of the gorillas.
