Urgench is the capital of Khorezm Province in north-western Uzbekistan, lying on the Shavat Canal, a branch of the Amu Darya. With around 165,000 inhabitants, it serves as the administrative and transport hub of the whole Khorezm region. The present city emerged in the seventeenth century after the original medieval town of Köhne-Ürgench in today's Turkmenistan was abandoned due to Mongol raids and a shift in the Amu Darya's course. Urgench is best known as the gateway to the historic city of Khiva, only about 35 kilometres away; most tourists reach Khiva via Urgench Airport. The local economy is built on cotton processing, food industries, machine building, and tourism. Its character is shaped by Soviet apartment blocks from the 1960s and 1970s and the spacious Al-Khwarizmi Park.
