The Uzboy Valley is an extraordinary geological feature in the Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan, representing the ancient dry bed of a distributary of the Amu Darya river. Stretching for about 750 kilometers from Lake Sarygamysh to the Caspian Sea, it serves as a testament to the region's dynamic hydrological history. Historically, the river was active until the 17th century, providing a lifeline for numerous settlements and trade routes across the desert. Archaeological sites along its banks reveal ruins of forts and caravanserais from the Parthian and medieval periods. The valley is characterized by steep banks, salt pans, and occasional spring-fed pools that sustain local desert fauna. The diversion of the Amu Darya northwards towards the Aral Sea eventually led to the desiccation of the Uzboy, drastically altering the Caspian Sea's water balance. Today, the valley is a key site for studying long-term climate change and human impact on river systems in Central Asia.

Getting there
