What is this place?
The Balkanabat Iodine Plant extracts technical iodine from the highly mineralized groundwater of the desert. It is one of the few iodine production facilities in Central Asia, supplying the chemical industry.
Visiting
The site is not open to visitors but can be seen from the passing desert road. Visiting the facility is typically not possible unless special permission is granted.

The best view is from the M37 road, which passes directly by the facility. From a nearby hill, the entire production site with its tanks and pipelines can be overlooked.
