Serdar, until 1999 known as Gyzylarbat and during the Soviet era as Kyzyl-Arvat, is a small town of around 50,000 inhabitants in Balkan Region, about 250 kilometres west of Ashgabat at the foot of the Kopet Dag. Founded in 1881 as a Russian military outpost along the Trans-Caspian Railway, it quickly grew into a key rail junction with large locomotive repair workshops, a tradition that continues today. Serdar is also famed for the artistic hand-knotted carpets of the Teke tribe, produced in the region for centuries, as well as for horse breeding. The surrounding valleys and slopes harbour pomegranate and mulberry orchards, small wineries and Sufi shrines such as the mausoleum of Parau Bibi, an important regional pilgrimage site for women seeking children.
