Bereket, until 1999 known as Gazanjyk and during the Soviet period as Kazandzhik, is a small town of around 25,000 inhabitants in Balkan Region in western Turkmenistan. The town lies on the southern edge of the Karakum Desert at the foot of the Lesser Balkan range, about 110 kilometres east of Balkanabat. Its very existence is owed to the railway: Bereket emerged in 1885 as a station on the Trans-Caspian Railway and later became a strategic junction where lines to Türkmenbaşy and Ashgabat meet and, since 2014, the international corridor to Gorgan in Iran branches off. The latter forms part of the Kazakhstan-Iran-Persian Gulf North-South corridor. Economically the town thrives on railway workshops, logistics, sheep and camel breeding and a small marble plant.
