Dekhistan Ruins (Turkmenistan)

Weather…

The ruins of Dekhistan, located in the Misrian Plain of southwestern Turkmenistan, are among the most remote and atmospheric archaeological sites in the country. The city flourished between the 10th and 13th centuries as a major commercial and cultural hub on the trade route between Persia and Khwarazm. Trotz the arid environment, its inhabitants developed a highly sophisticated irrigation system with over 150 kilometers of canals, turning the desert into a thriving agricultural oasis. Today, two monumental minarets and the grand portal of a mosque rise from the flat desert floor, showcasing the exquisite brickwork and calligraphy of the Khwarazm-Shah era. Dekhistan was once famous for its numerous caravanserais and madrasas, which served as essential stops for Silk Road travelers. The city's decline began in the 14th century when warfare led to the destruction of its vital water infrastructure and shifting environmental conditions made the area uninhabitable. The ruins now offer a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into the advanced desert civilizations of medieval Central Asia.
