- Remember that traveling to the Balkan region and Hazar often requires specific permits or guide registration.
- Ensure you get an export certificate for any carpets; without state authorization, they will be seized at the border.

Hazar, formerly Cheleken, is a port town on the eponymous peninsula in the eastern Caspian Sea, in Balkan Region, with about 9,000 inhabitants. The peninsula has been famed since antiquity for its oil seeps, mud volcanoes and salt deposits; Russian and Persian travellers wrote of burning water rising from the ground as early as the 18th century. The modern town was founded in 1933 when Soviet industry opened a major oil and ozokerite extraction operation here. In 1999 the settlement was renamed Hazar, the Turkmen word for Caspian. Economically the area now relies on oil production, iodine and bromine works and minor port traffic. Nature lovers visit the mud volcanoes, salt lakes and the Hazar State Nature Reserve, home to flamingos and Caspian seals along its shoreline.
