Shir Kabir Mosque and Mausoleum (Turkmenistan)

Weather…

The Shir Kabir Mosque, often referred to as part of the Meshed-i-Misrian complex in Dekhistan, is one of the oldest and most revered Islamic sanctuaries in Turkmenistan. The structure was built in the 9th or 10th century and served both as a mosque and a mausoleum. Particularly noteworthy is the elaborately decorated mihrab, adorned with fine Kufic inscriptions and floral stucco work, which are among the best examples of early Islamic art in Central Asia. The architecture combines pre-Islamic traditions with new Arabic influences, as seen in its massive construction and harmonious proportions. Shir Kabir was a major religious center in the flourishing city of Dekhistan before it was abandoned in the 14th century due to ecological changes. Today, the mosque remains a significant destination for pilgrims and researchers interested in the early spread of Islam in the region.
