Khalid Nabi
High up in the Gokcheh Dagh mountains lies the shrine of Khalid Nabi, a place of mystical silence and spiritual significance. The site is world-famous for its enigmatic cemetery, where hundreds of cylindrical tombstones stand, whose phallic shapes continue to raise archaeological questions today. The hike to the shrine gives spectacular views over the "rolling hills" of Turkmen Sahra, a landscape that glows in lush green in spring, resembling endless waves. Pilgrims come here to pay homage to the pre-Islamic prophet, while hikers enjoy the pristine nature and absolute seclusion. The contrast between the simple white shrine and the rugged mountain peaks creates an almost surreal atmosphere. In the area, one can often spot Turkmen riders maintaining the traditions of their ancestors. Access requires a drive over winding roads from Gonbad-e Qabus, making the visit a true adventure. There is minimal tourist infrastructure, which preserves the authenticity of the site. The convenient time to visit is April and May, before the summer heat colors the hills. A visit to Khalid Nabi is a journey into a timelessness rarely found.
