Yangykala Canyon

Yangykala Canyon, often referred to as the 'Fire Fortresses,' is a remarkable geological formation located in the Balkan Region of western Turkmenistan. The canyon was formed millions of years ago when the area was the floor of the ancient Tethys Sea, resulting in the striking limestone and clay walls visible today. The walls of the canyon change color depending on the position of the sun, ranging from brilliant white and yellow to deep pink and orange. The eroded plateaus and deep ravines stretch for several kilometers, creating a dramatic landscape that is virtually unparalleled in Central Asia. Due to its remote desert location, the site is difficult to access and requires specialized off-road vehicles, which has helped maintain its pristine beauty. Geologically, the cliffs provide a fascinating window into climatic changes and tectonic activity over millions of years.
