Vahdat, known as Kofarnihon until 2003, lies just 20 kilometres east of Dushanbe and now functions as the capital region’s most important satellite city. With around 50,000 inhabitants and a rapidly expanding catchment area, it acts as a hinge between the urban agglomeration and the mountain districts of the Rasht Valley. Its current name means “unity” in Tajik and was chosen after the 1990s civil war to emphasise the process of reconciliation. The city hosts a cement plant, textile production, and a key road and rail junction towards Nurek and eastern Tajikistan. Just outside town, popular weekend retreats line the Kofarnihon River, where residents gather for picnics. Within its administrative boundaries also lies the pilgrimage hill of Chiluchor Chashma, famous for its forty-four springs.
