Prior to its official promotion to city status in 2015, it held the distinction of being Taiwan's most populous township for several decades. With a population of roughly 125,000, Yuanlin is situated on the eastern edge of the Changhua Plain, positioned at the base of the Baiguo Mountain range, which is famous for its fruit orchards. The city is nationwide famous for its preserved and dried fruit production, acting as the primary center for Taiwan's fruit processing industry. A major urban transformation occurred in 2014 with the completion of the railway elevation project, which modernized the cityscape and improved connectivity across the districts. Yuanlin is also an educational center, hosting several colleges and technical institutes. The surrounding hills provide popular recreational spots, such as the Baiguoshan hiking trails and various historic temples that serve the local community.
