Gaomei Wetlands (Taiwan)

Weather…

The Gaomei Wetlands in Taichung's Qingshui District is a critical ecological conservation area spanning over 700 hectares. This vast tidal flat is located at the mouth of the Dajia River and is renowned for its diverse biodiversity, including over 120 species of birds and various rare plants. To protect the fragile environment while allowing public access, a long wooden walkway was constructed, enabling visitors to observe the wildlife without trampling the mudflats. The area is also famous for its rows of massive wind turbines and the historic Gaomei Lighthouse. At low tide, the reflective surface of the water creates a mirror-like effect, particularly during sunset, attracting photographers from around the world. It serves as an important stopover for migratory birds and a primary habitat for the endangered Bolboschoenus planiculmis, highlighting the area's ecological significance.
