Nantou City is the county seat of Nantou County, the only landlocked county in Taiwan, located in the central part of the island. The city is situated on the Bagua Plateau, overlooking the Maoluo River valley. Historically, the area was a center for agriculture, particularly tea and fruit production, which remains vital to the local identity. Nantou was severely impacted by the 1999 Jiji earthquake, leading to extensive reconstruction efforts that modernized much of the urban landscape. The nearby Zhongxing New Village served as the seat of the Taiwan Provincial Government for decades, adding administrative importance to the region. The city's economy is supported by light industry, administrative services, and its proximity to major tourist destinations like Sun Moon Lake. Local Hakka and Hoklo cultures blend with indigenous influences, reflecting the diverse heritage of central Taiwan.
