Dakeng

Dakeng is the beloved 'back garden' of Taichung, frequently likened to Taipei's Yangmingshan. The area features twelve distinct hiking trails catering to various fitness levels. Its most iconic feature is the unique trail design found on routes 1 through 5: paths constructed entirely from interlocking wooden logs that resemble a giant ladder draped over the ridgeline. While visually impressive and environmentally friendly, these trails require steady footing and good balance. The trails ascend through lush subtropical forests to ridges that offer panoramic views of the Taichung skyline and, on clear days, the Taiwan Strait. After a rigorous hike, many visitors head to the nearby hot springs to soak and recover. The region is also an agricultural hub, famous for producing high-quality citrus fruits and lychees, which are sold at bustling trailhead markets. Food-wise, a trip to Dakeng isn't complete without tasting its famous taro balls, served either hot or cold as a sweet treat. Located on the eastern edge of the city, it is easily accessible by public bus or car within 30 minutes. The best visiting season is from autumn to early spring, when the weather is dry and temperatures are well-suited for outdoor exertion on the log paths.
