Daraa lies in southern Syria near the Jordanian border, on the fertile Hauran plain, a basalt plateau that has been the granary of southern Syria since antiquity. In Roman and Byzantine times the city was known as Adraa and was an important center of the province of Arabia; remains of a Roman theater and old gates are still visible. The nearby town of Bosra preserves an exceptionally well-preserved black basalt theater and citadel, both inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. In modern Syria, Daraa has been a key agricultural center for wheat, barley, olives and grapes, as well as a station on the Hejaz Railway to Medina. In March 2011 the arrest and torture of several local teenagers who had spray-painted anti-regime slogans triggered the first major protests of the uprising here, which is why the city is often called the cradle of the Syrian revolution.
